What Challenges face the Construction Industry for 2023

The past few years have been challenging for most organisations and sectors, none more so than the construction industry. Brexit, the pandemic, and the war in Ukraine have all contributed to economic strain in the sector.

In this article, we take a look at what challenges lie ahead for the construction industry in 2023.

Material Costs

As a result of Covid and the consequences of the sanctions resulting from the war in Ukraine, supply chain difficulties within the construction sector have increased detrimentally over the last few years.

As a result, the price of construction materials in recent years has had a huge increase. With these inflationary pressures and rising material costs severely impacting the construction sector as a whole, we can only hope that as we move forward in 2023 these surges in costs will begin to recede to a more optimistic and favourable level.

It has never been more important for businesses to look at their supply chain materials and costs in a little bit more detail. Using suppliers with ample stock hold and taking a closer look at the products used on-site to gauge favourably for durable and long-lasting materials, is one way in which the construction sector can minimise the impact of these issues.

Labour Shortages

Labour shortages within the construction sector have become an increasing problem over the last few years. The impact of Covid, which undoubtedly forced large numbers of labourers to look at alternative careers as construction projects were put on hold, has negatively impacted the amount of readily available labour for new and upcoming construction sites and projects.

Another factor which is detrimentally impacting the labour availability on construction sites is the cost-of-living crisis and the need for wage improvements in the face of rising inflation. And undoubtedly, this will play an important role in the coming years in what difficulties the construction sector will face.

Environmental Issues and Sustainability

Climate change, sustainability, and the environmental pressures which are placed on the construction sector will undoubtedly shape, and reshape, the way construction sites and projects progress going forward.

The government's carbon-neutral 2050 plan, in particular, will place a strain on the construction sector and construction companies to look to create a more sustainable way to design a project for their clients.

This is why it’s important to look at your supply chain in more detail and look for manufacturers who are consistently meeting sustainability benchmarks to further improve your own supply chain and carbon-neutral footprint.

At Stop’N’Go, this is something that we are extremely passionate about, and we are consistently looking to improve the sustainability of our products and of our carbon-neutral footprint.
